I saw a study that showed people in general to be happier one year after the recession of 2008 started. Almost instantly I understood why, relief.
The study polled people across all economic levels, a lot of whom had not cashed in on real estate or stocks. For a long time there had been a building resentment between the growing have / have not crowds. The constant news of the Dow rising and people making millions flipping houses was tiring to workers getting by. The recession narrowed the gap a little and brought the meaning of success into perspective. Even the wealthy have slowly began to see that happiness should not be tied to something so volatile as money. I think a lot of people are seeing the economic challenges as a much needed break in the consume and dispose lifestyle. A break in the win at all cost just to keep up mentality. A break in the expectation inflation that had left nearly everybody wanting more and willing to finance it.
